Siimpel Scores Design Win

Arcadia-based Siimpel Corporation, a provider of MEMs-based, optical
microsystems, has scored a design win in a Motorola handset. According
to Siimpel, Motorola is uses its MEMs-based, continuous autofocus
camera within a cellular handset, the MING A1600. Financial impact
of the deal was not disclosed, however Siimpel said the handset
is the first to integrate its autofocus camera technology. Among
features on the handset enabled by the camera are panoramic image
stitching, translation and scanning of both English and Chinese
characters, and automated geotagging of photos. Siimpel's MEMs-based
camera reduces the size of phone cameras. The firm is venture backed
by Motorola, QUALCOMM, Micron Technologies,Draper Fisher Jurvetson,
Global Catalyst, Scale Venture Partners, Zone Ventures, Portage
Ventures, and SunAmerica.
